ATTACHMENT THEORY
Born with limited capacities for self-regulation, human infants are dependent on the externally mediated interactive regulation of their primary attachment figures to maintain their arousal within the window of tolerance, Corrigan, et al. (2011). Whether that attachment relationship is consistent or inconsistent, secure or insecure, it provides the context within which the infant develops lifelong tendencies for regulating arousal and affect. Early disruptions in attachment have enduring detrimental effects, diminishing the capacity to moderate arousal, develop healthy relationships and cope with stress.
Early attachment needs are expressed as bodily-based needs. Touch is the first interaction immediately after birth. It is the first form of communication between the baby and its primary attachment system. Visual and auditory functions become stronger as time goes on. Attachment is based on caregiverâs concise and accurate attunement to infant: physical handling, feeding, soothing, crying, laughing, cooing, holding the baby, eye contact, etc.
Arousal instead of attachment occurs if the primary attachment figure is abusive, emotionally vacant, or some âtype of perpetrator.â There is no comfort or repair from supposed caregiver. In actuality, trauma can occur before birth by an attachment experience in the womb.
